Holland, officially known as the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is a contradiction in terms. Famously liberal on social issues, the people retain a rather conservative attitude when it comes to appearance and mannerisms. The land of dikes, tulips and, yes, marijuana, Holland’s contradiction is on full display in Amsterdam. One section of the city contains museums housing famous pieces from Rembrandt while another contains the red light district. While admittedly an odd coupling, the contradictions travel in Holland a must when visiting Europe.
