Birding Projects for Kids

Bird Watching is the second fastest growing hobby in the country. One reason is that it is one of the most family orientated hobbies that take place outdoors. Birding projects for kids get them involved at an early age.

Birding Projects for Kids

Since the hobby does not involve the use of any dangerous or hard to handle equipment, it is ideal for children of all ages. All the child has to do is look through the lens of a field scope or pair of binoculars. In fact, for younger children, all that is needed is the bare eye. The ability to recognize the various species of birds and to identify them is what makes the hobby challenging.

One of the most common birding projects for kids involves the building of bird feeders. The idea of the bird feeders is to draw birds to the backyard of the home or another selected area where the child can view them. What makes this such a successful project for children is that it combines the fun of designing and actually building the feeder with the fun of watching the birds it attracts. Children are not going to be overly impressed with the rarity of a particular species. It is the quantity and color of the common birds that will delight them the most.

Feeders can be all many types. Just a bucket of seeds will actually do to attract birds, but the idea is to develop interesting and novel projects that will get the children involved in the craftsmanship of the building process. This sense of having been part of the construction of the feeder is what makes everything more exciting for the children when the birds arrive to feed.

Other birding projects for kids involve identification of bird species. This can be done with special kits featuring pictures and characteristics of local birds that can be used to teach even very young children to recognize them. The identification kits can be made as games or simply as flash cards.

Although many of the birding projects for kids are intended for local and backyard use, there is no rule that prevents children from going into the field. Some of the kits that are made for kids get them involved in the conservation efforts that are so closely connected with bird watching. This is surely one of the greatest things that you can do for your children in the world of outdoors. Teach them to appreciate and protect the great natural resources of the outdoors.
