Birding South East Arizona

Many parts of the United States are home to interesting and diverse species of birds, but some of the most exotic are in the Southwest – birding southeast Arizona is one example.

Birding South East Arizona

The state of Arizona is mostly known for its deserts, canyons and painted rocks – but there is much more to Arizona than just hot and dry landscape. The climate of this area means that it can be home to species of birds not normally found in the wetter, colder regions of the country. Both year round flocks and migratory birds make their home in this state, so birding south east Arizona can allow you to see how different birds react to this environment.

The Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory has been dedicated to the preservation and observation of the birds in this area since 1996. Organizing tours as well as protecting both private and public lands in order to preserve the homes of the birds here means that SABO is the authority on the birds of this area. Guided bird walks and tours are offered in many different towns and cities in southeast Arizona, so no matter which part of the state you visit, you can enjoy birding here.

Some of the most unique birds in the southeastern area of Arizona are the many groups of hummingbirds that make their home here. The Arizona Hummingbird Survey is a citizen run science project that is aimed at cataloging and protecting the hummingbirds that make this state their home. There are 18 different species of hummingbirds that live in Arizona, due to its climate and location, and most of them live in the southeastern corner of the state. Four species call Arizona their year round home.

Also great for birding southeast Arizona is the Southeastern Arizona Birding Trail. This printed map and guide includes directions to 52 different birder friendly and bird rich areas in this part of Arizona. Put together as a joint effort by several different state and private conservation entities, this map is sold in Arizona or can be purchased online so you can map out your trip ahead of time. Many newer sites are included in the latest edition.

Arizona is a great place to visit, even if you aren't interested in birding or birds. But if you truly love this hobby, birding southeast Arizona can be a great vacation trip for you and your family, full of interesting sights and experiences.
