Borrego Hiking Trails

California is a great place to visit if you want to enjoy some diverse hiking and climbing sites – and the Borrego hiking trails of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park are some of the best located here.

Borrego Hiking Trails

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is located in eastern San Diego county, near the city of Borrego Springs, California. It is the largest state park that is located within California, and the Borrego hiking trails within the park are around 500 miles long, an astonishing length for any hiking region. The park itself also has 12 different wilderness areas to explore, and even more miles of dirt paths that can be used for both hiking and biking. The wilderness areas include palm groves and wildflower fields, as well as mountains and canyons to explore.

The California Hiking and Riding Trail, which extends for 25 miles, passes through the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and is one of the more popular Borrego hiking trails. There are several locations throughout the park that allow access to this trail. For those who would prefer a shorter, easier one day trek, there are many other trails at all different levels available within the park. The Pena Spring Trail is a good place to start – an easy, half mile round trip walk through the Anza area of the park. This walk goes to a water source through chaparral vegetation, and it takes place at 3,400 feet, allowing for great views.

If you prefer a hike that is a little longer and more strenuous, the Jasper Trail is a 15 mile round trip trail that takes approximately four hours to complete. This moderate rated trail descends into Grapevine Canyon, and ends up at the Yaqui Well Primitive Campground. Easy to access and relatively easy to complete, this trail allows you to see many of the breathtaking views available in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, specifically those that are in the Anza region of the park.

Other activities and resources available in the park include campsites, both primitive for those who enjoy “roughing” it, and hookups for RV's. There are also guided tours of the park available, as well as horseback riding (and horseback riding trails), historical areas and even a museum on site. Reservations are recommended for those who want to camp in this state park.

A trip to the Borrega hiking trails in the Anza-Borrega Desert State Park will be fun for hikers of all levels and skill sets. The combination of available hiking and climbing means that everyone who chooses to visit here will have an enjoyable time.
