Fly Fishing in Northern Canada

Canada is a mecca for most fishing enthusiasts. When you want to get really serious, fly fishing in Northern Canada should be at the top of your list.

Fly Fishing in Northern Canada

When you talk about a fly fishing trip to Northern Canada, the word fly has two different meanings. First, it is the name of the sport. It is that particular type of fishing that puts a bit of brightly colored material around a hook and drops it almost on top of a hungry fish. It has a long and varied history as a "gentlemen's" method of fishing and has been enjoying a revival of popularity recently as it has been discovered that it works on a wide variety of fish species.

The second meaning of fly is in "fly in" fishing trips. This is the special lure of many Northern Canadian fly fishing expeditions. The lodges are located in remote areas that are often accessible only by float planes that take you from a larger population hub and land you right on the lake in front of the lodge. The flight to the lodge becomes part of the experience, of course, as you get a small plane bird's eye view of some of the most beautiful and unspoiled country in the World. It is not uncommon to have your pilot swing low to give you a closer look at a large moose swimming across a small lake.

The fun of the plane ride is not the only thing that makes the fly in lodge attractive. It saves a lot of time that would have been spent driving the endless miles to the most remote fishing areas of Northern Canada. It is time that can now be spent fishing and not driving. It opens up some of the great tracts of Northern Canada where unwary fish are waiting in the same way they waited when the first settlers began to arrive on the shores of North America.

There are trout, of course. Trout have long been the main target of the fly fisherman, but they are only one type of fish that can be taken from the remote lakes and streams of Northern Canada. Large mouth bass, pike, walleye, and musky all will attack a well presented fly. The lodges specialize in fly fishing and the guides not only can take you to the fish, but can also give you pointers on fly fishing techniques. You do not need to be an expert to enjoy this experience. In fact, they have no prejudice here against casting reels if that is your preferred method of fishing.

Despite the fact that the lodges are so remotely located, you do not have to worry about roughing it too much. The Northern Canada flying fishing lodges usually supply all the amenities you would expect of any lodge. Fine dinning is available and the rooms are comfortable. The fishing range runs from Northern Ontario across the entire upper tier of the country all the way to the Pacific Northwest.
