Gulf Coast Texas Birding
There are many different states in the United States that offer tantalizing locations for bird watchers – and Texas is definitely one of them, with the great Gulf Coast Texas birding located here.
Gulf Coast Texas Birding
The Gulf Coast of Texas is a popular vacation spot for many reasons, not just Gulf Coast Texas birding. Families come here from all over the US in order to have great beach vacations in the summer, and many people also spend their winters down in this warmer climate. The Gulf Coast area of Texas is usually divided up into three areas – the Upper Texas Coast, the Central Texas Coast and the Lower Texas Coast. There is great birding to be had in each of these areas.
To find out where to start your Gulf Coast Texas birding adventure, it's a good idea to get in contact with the local birding group. In this case, the birding group that will help you to find the perfect spot for your trip is the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, which is dedicated to the preservation of the birds' habitats in the Gulf of Mexico area. The headquarters of the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory (GCBO) is in Lake Jackson, Texas.
The Gulf Coast offers many opportunities for bird watchers to see unique and rare species, such as the nearly extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker. The GCBO is helping to preserve the habitat of many of these birds, some of which are migratory and others which call Texas their year round home. The GCBO also co-sponsors the Great Texas Birding Classic – a competitive bird watching tournament that takes place each year in April (which coincides with the great migration of birds throughout Texas).
There are over 623 documented species of birds that are known to live in (or migrate through) Texas, with over 400 of those species coming through the Gulf Coast during the spring months of migration. The diverse habitat of this area means that many different species can be supported in the region, but more and more habitat is being destroyed due to construction and commerce. The GCBO along with the Great Texas Birding Classic is aimed at making sure that Gulf Coast Texas birding is around for many years to come.
Visiting the Gulf Coast of Texas can make for an enjoyable vacation for any family or person – but if you enjoy watching birds, this is definitely the place to be. Make sure to book your trip for April, when the spring migration will bring the most species to the area.
