Lake Huron Salmon Fishing
One of the Great Lakes, Huron offers a wide variety of fish for anglers to tackle. Lake Huron salmon fishing is on of the more popular trips.
Lake Huron Salmon Fishing
Lake Huron salmon fishing has had a hit and miss reputation. Bordered by Michigan and Canada, the lake is not restocked by the Canadian Government, and only recently has any action taken place in the south. This led, of course, to good and bad seasons.
Fortunately, the Chinook Hatchery opened in 1985 and has been run by a volunteer group. These days the hatchery is introducing up to a quarter of a million salmon into Lake Huron each year. Again, this is a volunteer organization and, as such, is looking for ways to generate money. Although random donations are accepted, their big fundraiser is the Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby. Support this group! If you can’t catch the Derby, you can send donations to LAKE HURON FISHING CLUB at P.O. Box 355, Southampton Ontario N0H 2L0.
The Chantry Chinook Classic Salmon Derby is held from July 29th to August 11th. There are also special days for families, kids and such during this period. Sponsors are plentiful and prizes run up to a total of $125,000. You can also charter boats if you so desire.
As to Lake Huron salmon fishing, many of the tributaries running into the lake do the job. Sydenham River is one area. Salmon fishing in the Port Sanilac and Lexington areas is also top notch. King Salmon are your target and April through May is the prime time, but the entire summer offers opportunities.
Lake Huron salmon fishing has made a huge comeback thanks to the hard work of volunteers running hatcheries. If you are planning on going after the salmon, make sure to make a donation.
