The White River originates in the Boston Mountains of Northwest Arkansas and flows 722 miles to the Mississippi River. It flows mostly through the Ozark Mountain region of Arkansas, but does take one loop up into Southern Missouri before returning. The river is a clean, clear, fast flowing river through most of its early course. It widens and slows down as it approaches the Mississippi in the Arkansas delta.
The course of the river flows through some of the most beautiful and unspoiled countryside in the United States. The fast running waters at its beginnings are World famous for record sized brown trout. Although unspoiled and relatively isolated, the White River has long been a shrine for serious fly fishermen. The river was once 722 miles of free flowing water, but it has been converted into a serious of impoundments and tail runs by an ambitious water management program run by the United States Corps of Engineers.

A serious of dams has broken up the river into a series of impoundments and tail runs that provide recreational areas, hydroelectric power, and flood management. It also produces some of the best trout fishing that can be found anywhere. A popular trout magazine has listed the White River in the top ten fisheries in the country. The river is stocked with brown, lake, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. The 92 miles stretch below Muscle shoals dam near Mountain Home, Arkansas is the prime fishing spot of the river. Brown and rainbow trout reproduce naturally in this area. The current world record brown trout came out of this waterway.
Drift fishing is a very popular way of fly fishing on the White River in Arkansas. Boat rentals and drop off and pick up services are readily available in many of the towns that border the region. There are also several lodges located in the Mountain Home area that cater to fly fishing on the White River. These lodges provide guides and equipment as well as meals and lodging. Although this area of the Ozark Mountains often seems as remote as the farthest reaches of Northern Canada or Alaska once you are there, it is really only a short drive from most of the states of Midwest America.

However, you will be hard pressed to find a better spot than the wild White River of Northern Arkansas running right through the heartland of America.
